Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The African Union (AU) is convening a strategic review in Addis Ababa to assess the implementation of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) signed between Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in November 2022.
This agreement aimed to end the devastating Tigray War. Getachew Reda, president of Tigray’s regional interim administration, stressed the importance of full implementation for lasting peace. He called for a “serious review” to address the “legitimate constitutional demands of the people of Tigray.”
The Tigray interim administration confirmed engagement with the Ethiopian government solely through AU mediation to address issues hindering the deal’s progress. This signifies a shift towards a more structured approach facilitated by the AU.
Meanwhile, the presence of U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, at the review underscores the international community’s commitment to the peace process. His attendance alongside representatives from the UN, EU, IGAD, and the US reflects a unified effort to push for successful CoHA implementation.
The strategic review signifies a crucial step towards achieving lasting peace in Ethiopia. The combined efforts of the AU, international observers, and both parties involved offer a glimmer of hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
