Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Dr. Kasa Teshager, a member of the Addis Ababa City Council, has been granted immunity after months of detention in connection with the state of emergency imposed in the Amhara region.
Dr. Teshager was elected to the council representing the ruling Prosperity Party in Addis Ababa’s Kolfe Keranyo sub-city.
He was arrested following unrest in the Amhara region and the subsequent nationwide state of emergency.
Several other officials, including members of parliament and regional councils, were also detained without their immunity being waived.
The Addis Ababa City Council lifted Dr. Teshager’s immunity following a request from the Ministry of Justice.
This decision comes weeks after the House of Representatives extended the state of emergency.
Two other council members also had their immunity revoked this week.
Christian Tadele and Dessalen Chane (Dr.), members of the House of Representatives, remain imprisoned without charges.
The council may consider lifting their immunity upon returning from recess.
