Addis Abab, Ethiopia – Influential spiritual leader Abune Mar Mar Marie Emmanuel was stabbed while delivering a live lecture at the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd in Wakeley, Sydney, Australia this evening.
According to authorities, there were no life-threatening injuries sustained in the attack. One person was arrested at the scene.
Mar Marie Emmanuel, known for his English-language teachings on social media, was among those injured. He was treated at a local hospital along with Father Isaac, a priest who was also injured in the attack.
The Eastern Orthodox Church released a statement urging for peace and requesting people to leave the area surrounding the church.
Local authorities are investigating the motive for the attack.
This incident comes just six days after a separate knife attack in a Sydney market hall that left six people dead. Police have not indicated a connection between the two attacks.
