12 April 2024
Addis.Ababa, Ethiopia – The Security and Safety Joint Task Force announced today they will intensify operations against a local extremist group following a violent confrontation in the capital on Wednesday.
In a press release, the Task Force confirmed the arrest of group leader Nahusenai Andarge Tareqin and member Ebenezer Gashaw Abate. Both face legal action stemming from the shootout with security personnel.
Authorities identified Andarge as the mastermind behind a foiled mass attack planned for Addis Ababa and its surroundings. The statement alleges Andarge recruited young people and secured financial and logistical support to achieve the group’s “evil goals.”
The Task Force emphasized their awareness of the group’s activities despite Wednesday’s attacks. The release details a confrontation in Bole sub-district where extremists, using a car with license plate 2C 14373 A/A, opened fire on officers who attempted to stop them near Millennium Hall. The incident resulted in injuries to two policemen and the death of a civilian named Ato Ashaw Getnat, who reportedly refused to cooperate with the group.
The statement condemns the group’s shift to “terrorism,” highlighting their failed attempts to destabilize the Amhara region. The Task Force urges vigilance from hotels, guesthouses, rental services, and transportation providers. They further encourage the public to report suspicious activity and cooperate with security forces.
